Making Your House a Home
Making Your House a Home:
What you put inside your house, how you do your landscape makes the difference between whether you enjoy spending time there or not. No matter the size or the design of your home, the most important part of making it your own is decorating to your personal style.
Make it Functional
Your home is supposed to be FOR you! If you enjoy cooking or baking, decorate your kitchen with jars, bowls, planted herbs. Whatever your style is, incorporate the utensils and appliances into it. This makes it cute and accessible. If you enjoy movie nights, cuddled up in the living room, decorate your bookshelves with DVDs and keep extra blankets folded on the couch or in a basket somewhere in the room. Use the blankets to incorporate the colors you want to pop or keep the neutral, warm tones to make it cozy.
Sure, expensive furniture and spotless homes are appearing, but that does not add warmth. What adds warmth to you space is rugs and throw blankets, and comfortable furniture with room for your entire family or whole group of friends. Side table lamps with a warm light, potted plants, and beautiful long curtains are another way to make your home comfy and cozy.
Dress Up Empty Walls
This can be one of the hardest parts of decorating, believe it or not. You don’t want to clutter a wall with a collection of picture frames or too much mismatch furniture. Decorate with things that mean something to you. Memorabilia from your travels, pictures of your favorite places, or your favorite days, or my favorite, family photos printed on canvas. Lighting, mirrors, a shelf or bench, and a clock are also good options to fill up an empty was.
Make Guests Feel Welcome
Nothing makes a house feel more like a home than when your closest friends and family visit. Make you entry way inviting and welcoming by placing comfortable outdoor seating near your front door next to the mat just before you walk in, lush plants on your porch, and decorative pots or buckets or something to suit your style. You’ll love going home and hosting get togethers and your favorite people will too!
Create a Lived-In Look
If it doesn’t look like you live in your home you won’t want to spend time in it. You want to showcase your hobbies. If you love music, showcase your speaker, or a record player that has been passed down in your family. Leave out your paints on your shelf and make it part of your décor. Use the furniture you’ve collected over time instead of buying new even if you have to revamp some of them to give them new life.
Add Personality to Every Room
Unless your style is a cohesive look throughout your entire home, give each room personality. Each room should reflect its functionality. If it’s a bedroom, try doing an accent wall or bold furniture that match with the pillowcases on your bed. You want it to fit you and your comfort! If it’s an office, pick a color palette that motivates you, something that convinces you to be productive!
Nothing makes a home feel as cozy and welcoming as the smell of fresh baked apple pie, but the best part is, you don’t even have to bake an apple pie! Light candles around your home that smell like your favorite desserts, or your favorite time of year and your home will fill with smells of your favorite things. Candles also offer a beautiful glow that is just a bonus for comfort!
The key to making your house a home is simple… Make it your own and you will feel at home.
